India’s first high-speed rail corridor, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project, has crossed 61% overall physical completion, marking another major milestone in the country’s most ambitious railway infrastructure project.
Being implemented by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) with technical and financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the project aims to introduce Japanese Shinkansen technology to India and dramatically reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
According to the latest project update, more than ₹90,966 crore has already been spent on construction as work progresses across Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli.
Construction Progress Picks Up Pace
The 508.17-kilometre corridor has witnessed substantial progress across multiple construction segments.
Key milestones achieved so far include:
- 452 km of piers completed out of the total 508 km alignment.
- 356 km of viaduct girders successfully launched.
- 209 km of reinforced concrete (RC) track bed completed.
- 190 overhead electrification (OHE) masts installed.
These milestones indicate that major civil engineering work is steadily advancing, particularly across the Gujarat section of the corridor.
Undersea Tunnel Construction Underway
One of the project’s most technically challenging components is the 21-kilometre underground and undersea tunnel connecting Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai with Shilphata.
Construction has already progressed by 4.8 kilometres between Ghansoli and Shilphata.
The tunnel is expected to play a crucial role in bringing the high-speed railway into Mumbai while overcoming geographical and urban constraints.
India’s First Bullet Train Corridor
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor will stretch across 508.17 kilometres, covering:
- 349 km in Gujarat
- 154 km in Maharashtra
- 4 km in Dadra & Nagar Haveli
The route will feature 12 stations:
- Mumbai (BKC)
- Thane
- Virar
- Boisar
- Vapi
- Bilimora
- Surat
- Bharuch
- Vadodara
- Anand
- Ahmedabad
- Sabarmati
The service will use Japan’s E5 Series Shinkansen trains, known for their aerodynamic design, advanced safety systems, and high-speed performance.
The trains will operate at a maximum speed of 320 km/h, with a design speed of 350 km/h, reducing travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad from the current 6–8 hours to approximately 2 hours.
Phased Operational Timeline
The project will be commissioned in phases.
According to the latest schedule:
- August 2027: The first operational section between Surat and Bilimora (approximately 50 km) is expected to open for passenger services.
- Late 2027: The entire Gujarat stretch, from Vapi to Sabarmati (around 352 km), is targeted to become operational.
- 2029: Full commissioning of the 508-kilometre Mumbai–Ahmedabad corridor, connecting Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai with Ahmedabad.
The phased rollout is intended to begin commercial operations while construction continues on the more complex sections in Maharashtra.
Why It Matters
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project represents India’s first venture into high-speed rail and is expected to transform intercity travel by introducing world-class Shinkansen technology.
Beyond reducing travel time, the corridor is expected to improve regional connectivity, stimulate economic activity, generate employment, and strengthen India’s railway infrastructure through technology transfer and modern engineering practices.
With construction now over 61% complete and the first operational section scheduled to open in 2027, the project is moving closer to bringing India’s first bullet train into commercial service.
