For decades, cargo bound for eastern Nepal had to stop, get unloaded, and get reloaded at the border before continuing its journey. This week, for the first time, a train just skipped that step entirely.
The Inaugural Run
India’s first direct commercial container freight train from Kolkata Port completed its journey to Biratnagar, Nepal, carrying 1,225 tonnes of canola grain across 40 wagons. The train ran on the 18.6-km Jogbani–Biratnagar broad-gauge line, a route inaugurated back in 2023 but only now opened to full commercial freight traffic. Officials from Kolkata Customs, Kolkata Port, CONCOR, and Nepal’s Consulate General jointly flagged off the departure.
Why the Route Matters
Until now, Birgunj was the only Nepali customs point rail-linked to Indian seaports for third-country cargo — meaning anything headed to eastern Nepal had to be trucked the rest of the way, or transshipped at the border, adding time and cost. This run operationalizes a revised India–Nepal Rail Transit Protocol that allows both containerized and bulk cargo to move end-to-end by rail, with all containers tracked electronically along the way.
What It Means for Trade
The change is expected to meaningfully cut logistics costs for industries in eastern Nepal — some estimates put the reduction as high as 40% — while shrinking transit times to roughly a day. A single train can now carry up to 45 forty-foot containers directly into Biratnagar Customs Yard, bypassing the multiple handling points that used to slow cargo down.
The Bigger Picture
The move cements Kolkata Port’s position as Nepal’s primary eastern gateway to global trade, following a regulatory update late last year that first opened the door to rail cargo from Kolkata, Haldia, and Visakhapatnam reaching Biratnagar. For exporters, importers, and manufacturers on both sides of the border, it’s a rare case where a customs paperwork change translates into a very physical, very immediate improvement: one less stop on a very long supply chain.
