India’s First Vande Bharat Freight Train Reaches 145 km/h During Technical Trials

India has achieved another milestone in railway modernization as the country’s first Vande Bharat platform-based Freight EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) successfully reached a top speed of 145 km/h during its first day of technical trials.

The high-speed freight train is currently undergoing testing in the Kota Division of West Central Railway, with trials being supervised by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO).

Designed to transport time-sensitive cargo such as e-commerce shipments, pharmaceuticals, and perishable goods, the new Freight EMU is expected to significantly improve the speed and efficiency of India’s logistics network.

Freight EMU Hits 145 km/h on Day One

The 16-coach prototype achieved a maximum speed of 145 km/h during return runs between Kota and Mahidpur Road on July 29, 2026.

Testing is taking place along the Kota–Nagda–Sawai Madhopur section of the busy Delhi–Mumbai railway corridor, which was selected because of its advanced signalling infrastructure and suitability for high-speed trials.

The month-long testing programme will assess several performance parameters, including:

  • Ride stability and oscillation
  • Traction performance
  • Emergency braking distance
  • Safety systems
  • Performance under both loaded and unloaded conditions

Built by ICF Chennai

The Freight EMU has been manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, using the same design philosophy that powers India’s successful Vande Bharat passenger trains.

The rake consists of 16 coaches, including:

  • 12 Parcel Coaches
  • 2 Driving Trailer Coaches equipped with refrigerated storage
  • 2 Non-Driving Trailer Coaches

The train has a carrying capacity of approximately 395–397 tonnes, making it suitable for palletized cargo and high-value freight.

Designed for Faster Logistics

Unlike conventional freight trains that rely on locomotive-hauled configurations, the Freight EMU uses distributed electric traction, allowing for much quicker acceleration and deceleration.

The train has:

  • Design speed: 160 km/h
  • Expected operating speed: 80–90 km/h
  • Typical freight train speed: Around 60–70 km/h

The higher average speed is expected to reduce transit times while improving schedule reliability.

Modern Features

The Vande Bharat Freight EMU incorporates several features aimed at improving cargo handling and operational efficiency, including:

  • Automatic wide sliding plug doors
  • Pneumatic retractable roller flooring for faster loading and unloading
  • CCTV surveillance
  • LED lighting
  • Temperature-controlled cold-chain compartments
  • Advanced fire detection and safety systems

These features make the train particularly suitable for transporting temperature-sensitive and high-value cargo.

Transforming Freight Transport

Indian Railways plans to deploy the Freight EMU for express parcel services, e-commerce shipments, pharmaceuticals, fresh agricultural produce, and other time-critical goods.

By combining the speed of Vande Bharat technology with dedicated freight operations, the train is expected to support scheduled logistics services between major commercial centres such as Delhi-NCR and Mumbai.

The initiative also aligns with Indian Railways’ broader strategy to shift more cargo from road to rail, reducing logistics costs, easing highway congestion, and improving the efficiency of the country’s freight network.

Why It Matters

The successful trials of India’s first Vande Bharat Freight EMU represent a significant step toward modernizing rail freight transportation.

If testing is completed successfully, the train could usher in a new era of high-speed freight movement, enabling faster delivery of goods, strengthening supply chains, and enhancing India’s logistics competitiveness while making better use of the country’s expanding railway infrastructure.
