A little geography mix-up sparked a bigger conversation about where India’s solar manufacturing money is actually going.
Kolkata-headquartered Jupiter International has clarified that its new solar wafer facility, targeting 3 GW of annual capacity, is being built in Nagpur, Maharashtra — not West Bengal, despite some initial confusion. Construction is already underway, with operations expected to roll out in phases over the next 20 months. The plant is meant to reduce Jupiter’s reliance on imported silicon wafers from China by building out a more integrated domestic supply chain.
Setting the Record Straight
Reports on the investment figure for the Nagpur project vary — some cite a smaller wafer-focused facility, while industry trade press has described a much larger, fully vertically-integrated complex spanning wafers, cells, and modules with a substantially higher price tag. Regardless of the exact number, the location is confirmed: Nagpur, not Bengal.
Why West Bengal Isn’t Left Out
That doesn’t mean Bengal is out of the picture. Jupiter plans to partner with local module manufacturers in West Bengal to supply solar cells and modules for the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the government’s rooftop solar subsidy scheme. Company leadership has reportedly said any decision on direct manufacturing investment within West Bengal will wait until the state’s upcoming industrial policy takes shape.
The Bigger Picture at Jupiter
The Nagpur project builds on an already-expanding footprint. Jupiter currently operates multiple solar manufacturing units concentrated in Himachal Pradesh, with an additional facility in Odisha, and has been steadily adding capacity through new cell and module lines. The company is also reportedly eyeing a public listing in the coming year as part of its broader growth push.
Where West Bengal’s Solar Push Stands
West Bengal’s own rooftop solar capacity remains modest compared to leaders like Gujarat, which has thousands of megawatts installed. The state is pushing to close that gap through PM Surya Ghar installation targets and homegrown innovations in agri-voltaic rooftop systems — the backdrop against which Jupiter’s local partnership plans are taking shape.
