A press conference turned into a brawl on Saturday evening. Independent MP Pappu Yadav was defending a controversial Parliament skit when a man in the crowd hurled a shoe at him. Within seconds, chairs flew and supporters tackled the attacker. Police later recovered a knife from the scene, and Yadav now calls it an assassination attempt.
What Sparked It
The trigger traces back a few days earlier. Yadav, dressed in saffron robes, joined Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and SP MP Awadhesh Prasad for a satirical skit inside Parliament’s complex. Using a mock donation box, they acted out alleged theft from Ayodhya’s Ram Temple donations. The performance was meant as protest. But it landed very differently with the VHP, Hindu seers, and right-wing groups, who accused the MPs of mocking Sanatan Dharma. Complaints followed in Delhi, and police in Varanasi filed a formal case against all three lawmakers.
How the Attack Unfolded
Yadav called reporters to his residence to defend the skit. He argued that saffron “is not a monopoly of the RSS” and said he was speaking up for ordinary believers. Around 6:15 PM, two men who had entered posing as journalists confronted him mid-interview. One accused him of insulting Lord Ram, then threw a slipper directly at him. Supporters and security staff rushed forward immediately, and a scuffle broke out until Delhi Police took the two men into custody.
What Police Found
Officers identified the man who threw the shoe as Sumit, a 34-year-old iron trader from Ghaziabad. A second man, identified as Happy, was detained nearby in a car. According to police, a knife was recovered from Sumit during the scuffle, though the men reportedly claimed they’d passed security screening unarmed. Sumit told police he acted out of anger over what he saw as disrespect toward Hindu ascetics.
A Disputed Security Response
Yadav’s legal team says they’d requested extra protection before the event because of ongoing threats. Only three police personnel showed up, they say. Congress MP Pawan Khera used the incident to criticize Delhi Police leadership directly, arguing the force acts swiftly against protesting students but falls short when protecting opposition figures. Yadav has separately said he’s received death threats since the skit, including a reported ₹51 lakh bounty circulated on social media.
What’s Still Unresolved
Delhi Police haven’t confirmed whether the attack was premeditated, and no formal assassination-plot charges have been announced. For now, the case sits at the intersection of two disputes: one over religious sentiment, and another over how seriously threats against sitting lawmakers get taken before something like this happens.
